It all started the day after Asher was released from the hospital (another story I will share with you all, someday) and has been a crucial daily activity ever since. Trent used to read to him to help him fall asleep or to clam him down, but it has since evolved into much much more than that. I'm not talking about the little cardboard baby books with pictures (although he does love those, too) or even about
nursery rhymes and story books. No Mother Goose or Dr. Seuss here. Asher prefers a more mature selection. He has already finished, among others, The Hobbit, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, The Lightning Thief, and is about to finish The Earthsea Trilogy. His little eyes light up at the very sight of a book and he starts kicking his feet and reaching out with eager little hands. Books have stopped tantrums in their tracks and have been the only outlook of entertainment for those endless sick day afternoons. Asher will sit quietly for sometimes hours at a time, listening and absorbing every word. He even has his own "big boy" book (an old thesaurus that we don't care what happens to) that he will hold and examine during story time. He wont put books in his mouth or tear the pages out. They have a very specific purpose, and he knows just what that purpose is.
It could be that Asher has connected the practice of reading to mean uninterrupted one-on-one time with mommy and daddy, or it could be that he just enjoys the funny voices of the characters (Hagrid, anyone?). Whatever the reason is, this little habit has been one of the most precious parts of my day for some time now, and the Truth is... I hope it continues to be so forever and ever.
May I just say, this is a FABULOUS photo!!!! Way to rock the natural lighting. And super cute subjects too.
